How do I install QWS3270 Secure?

If the trial version of QWS3270 Secure is installed, we recommend that this version be uninstalled before installing the full version.

1. Uninstalling the trial version:

Press 'Start' button, 'Settings', 'Control Panel'.

In Control Panel, locate the icon for 'Add/Remove Programs' and double-click it.

In the dialog box that comes up, select the Install/Uninstall tab. Find the entry for "QWS3270 Secure version x.x Demo" in the list box.

Click once on the entry and then click 'Add/Remove...' button.

Select "Automatic" on the Select Uninstall Method dialog and click 'Next'

Click 'Finish'. After the uninstall has completed, press 'OK' in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.

2. Installing from a floppy diskette:

Select 'Start', 'Run'. Type "a:\QWS3270.exe" (substitute "a" with the drive letter of your floppy drive). Press enter, and follow the on-screen instructions.

3.  Installing from an email attachment:

Many email programs allow you to run the installation program from within the mail reader. In this case, simply double-clicking the attachment in the email will start the installation program. If this does not work on your system, find and highlight the attachment in the email you received from Jolly Giant Software. Select 'File', 'Save as...', and save the attachment as "qws3270.exe". Be sure to record the location of the newly saved program. In your File Manager or Windows explorer, locate the file saved from the email, and double-click on the file to start the installation program. For trouble free installation, accept the default options provided by QWS3270 Secure.

When uninstalling the trial version, can I just delete the QWS3270 Secure directory?

Please don't! Deleting the directory may cause some files to be left behind on your hard drive. We strongly recommend that you uninstall the trial version. Press 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control Panel' from the task bar. In Control Panel, locate the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon and double-click it. In the list of programs in the dialog box, locate and highlight 'QWS3270 Secure version x.x Demo', and click on 'Add/Remove'. Choose 'Automatic' in the uninstall options.  This will remove the trial version of QWS3270 Secure from your computer.

How do I connect to a host using QWS3270 Secure?

There are several ways to connect to a host using the application:

  • Use the QWS3270 / Connect menu item.

The application will open the Connect dialog box to allow you to select a pre-defined session.  This dialog box will allow you to configure and save information on any number of sessions. This method is useful if you connect to many different hosts.

  • Include a session parameter (-z<session>) on the command line.

The session parameter will use the pre-defined session to automatically connect to the specified host using the parameters defined for this session. Sessions can be defined using the QWS3270 / CONNECT dialog. See the How to use Command Line Commands section of the help file for details of command line parameters.

  • Use the AUTO CONNECT option.

The Options / Session menu allows the application to be customized to your preference. Specify the default host using this menu. If the AUTO CONNECT feature in the Startup Options group box of the Options / Application menu item is selected, the application will automatically connect to the host when the application is started.  This is useful if you always connect to the same host and want to bypass the connect dialog box.

  • Include a host on the command line.

You can include a host on the command line when you create the icon. The command line would be: "c:\directory\qws3270p host port". The port is optional and defaults to the value in the parameter settings. When a command line host is found, the application will automatically connect to the host when you select the icon from Windows Explorer or your desktop. This method is useful when you have a couple of hosts that you connect to frequently and want to bypass the connect dialog box.  Simply create an icon for each host with the host name or IP address on the command line. Because the application will accept a host and port as command line arguments,  it can be used with ARCHIE clients to connect to 3270 hosts.

  • Include a script parameter (-s<file.nam>) on the command line.

The script can contain the CONNECT command to automatically connect to a host. It can also contain other commands. See the Scripting section for more details on the scripting syntax. See the How to use Command Line Commands section of the help file for details of command line parameters.

What command line parameters does QWS3270 Secure accept?

For general questions on ways to automate QWS3270 Secure  please refer to the Automating Tasks section.

My printer attempts to print in shades of grey.  Is there a way to turn color printing off?

Some black and white printers ( for example the HP PCL 6) will make an attempt at rendering color in shades of grey.  This causes QWS3270 Secure to detect these printers as color printers. The screen prints will be printed in these shades of grey. Colour printing can be disabled. See the Print Formatting Options topic for details.
